Though the book's scenario is far fetched, it works as a teaching device. It gives one a sense of the vulnerabilities we face with resource constraints as we may find it difficult to maintain what was built with fossil energy and rich mineral ores.

Today BBC Radio 4 talked to oil geologist and local energy farms advisor Jeremy Leggett about OPEC and $100 oil prices - Leggett says "we haven't seen anything yet." Later in the broadcast, Radio 4 covered the newly released IPCC 4th Assessment on climate change, which notes that climate change is "severe and so sweeping that only urgent, global action" can head it off.
